THE DRACH CAVES
The Drach Caves are four big caves situated in Porto Cristo (Manacor’s municipal district) and are without a doubt the most famous in the island of Mallorca. They constitute one of the principal tourist attractions. To the extent where they are practically impossible to visit without having to wait in line.
Their horizontal length is near 2500 meters, and their maxim depth reaches 25 meters underground. The caves hide a grand underground lake in their interior, The Martel Lake, considered one of the major underground lakes in the world (177m. long per 30 m. wide.). In addition to that, the lake is utilized for classical concerts accompanied by shows of lights and shades.
The incomparable beauty of these caves is emphasized through the projected and realized illumination by Carlos Buigas.
The four caves, known by CovaNegra, Cova Blanca, Cova de Lluis Salvador and Covadelsfrancesos are interconnected and they are a consequence of the erosion caused by a water entrance from the Mediterranean sea.
Through the visit we will find more than 25 steps that take you to different rock levels. It is recommended to wear flat shoes, and non-slippery soles, because in certain zones of the cave the ground can be humid. There are steps; narrow paths and they are not adapted for baby trolleys or wheel chairs.
The visits are collective, not guided and approximately last an hour. It is not permitted to take pictures nor videos in the caves. However, there is a store in the exit to buy souvenirs.
